Quilt photos in the wild!
Some of my favorite quilt photos are taken outside. Natural light, beautiful surroundings, and a little bit of spontaneity can make a quilt photo feel so much more special.
Here are a few things I do when photographing quilts in nature:
Pack a quilt for the hike.
If I’m heading into the woods, I’ll usually bring a quilt along. You never know when a beautiful, unexpected photo opportunity will pop up!
Get the close-up.
Of course I want a photo of the whole quilt, but I also love using the natural light to capture the little details—the fabrics, quilting, and beautiful textures.
Let the surroundings be part of the photo.
If the scenery is beautiful, try placing your quilt off-center in the frame. You’ll showcase the whole quilt while letting the setting tell part of the story.
Drape it and let it fall.
A fence, rock, tree—whatever you find! Instead of trying to make the quilt perfectly straight, let it drape naturally. The more organic, the better.
And finally, have fun!
You’re already somewhere beautiful, so don’t let getting the perfect photo take over the whole outing. Take your pictures, pack up the quilt, and then put the camera away and simply enjoy where you are and who you are with.
Sometimes the best quilt photos happen when you’re not trying quite so hard to make them perfect.
